Guys SHOULD care if they want the sport to grow, meaning more media coverage for us, and growing cap space so my guys can move away from the cap.
Or it can remain an almost completely white sport on a continent growing increasingly diverse.
The sport's powers - at all levels - should be concerned that only 10% of the viewers of the league's showcase event come from the most rapidly growing segments of the population. |

Mikhail Baryshnikov.
I will now await the evidence of a guy who gives two poops. |

Maybe more games in the kitchen would help.
Or team branded ironing boards. |

It's NICE to say 'don't market' to a specific demographic, but that's not realistic. Sorry, but you will still have marketing campaigns targeted at specific audiences, in an attempt to gain market share. It's a fact and unless corporate dynamics change, it's not going to change.
And you know what...IT WORKS...or else companies wouldn't spend billions on convincing certain demographic segments they need this or that product.
I think if you put a good product out there it will do fine. The idea of corporate advertising/marketing (propaganda) as being the be-all, end-all for success is part of what ails our economic system and it's why the lowest common denominator always wins. Just the facts.
Hockey should first of all, put out a good product first and foremost. How they market to traditional fans, women, minorities is for them to decide. I do think a GREAT way to build the fanbase with more diversity IS with girls hockey, 'hockey in the hood' programs, etc...the kids who are playing hockey TODAY are your future season ticket holders be them women or men.

Guess we need to take away the women's right to vote, not allow them in the workplace, maybe just whore them all out to the highest bidder. Or do you not think even that highly of women? |

Not allowing women in the work place is absurd. Somebody needs to make me a sandwich for lunch. |

Yeah, that's fine. Diversity in sports fandom is great, but when women are crying about being codescended to because they're offered pink and white jerseys I couldn't care less about it. |

I don't like any jerseys/shirts that cater to any group, and that includes the green St. Patty's day ones and the like. If you want to put a pink ribbon or a 4-leaf clover on the shoulder or back, then go for it. Otherwise, your team has colors, so wear the right damn colors. |

An interesting piece. As a guy, it is difficult to relate to the issues brought up because I haven't experienced them myself. But I can see how it might be weird if suddenly we were marketed to as "male hockey fans" instead of just hockey fans in general.
I don't think they should stop selling the pink jerseys and such because I know women who like them, but offering more women's sizes and standard jersey / tshirt options also seems to make sense. And perhaps focus on marketing those items more.
I really enjoyed the email at the end of the linked article. I like the inclusive mentality she brings forth and inviting everyone to enjoy the game in their own way. |

Yeah - someone else's issues are never as important as our own. |
